Many foreign players have excelled wearing the jersey of our beloved club. Two of the greatest idols in the club were foreign, Enzo Francescoli and Marcelo Salas. Unfortunately, there have been many foreign players who were not able to meet the expectations that many have desired. Because of this, it is always an issue when a foreign players signs with the club. River fans are very demanding of their players, being one of the most demanding groups in the world. It is extremely more demanding when a foreign player joins the group.
What happened on Thursday was one of the most disrespectful and traitorous act in a long time for the club and for the fans. Sebastian Washington Abreu, the 32-year-old Uruguayan national, decided to leave the club within one hour of leaving for preseason training in Mendoza. Abreu decided that he would join Spanish Second Division club Real Sociedad to pursue a “challenge” in his career despite the obvious reason which is the money factor. As soon as this news hit the media, fans from all over the world reacted in a furious manner.
In “La Pagina Millonaria”, many fans expressed their distaste for Mr. Abreu, insulting him from every angle and calling him “traitor”, “deceiver”, “deserter”, and “sneak”. These were terms that were used quite often with additional words which I have chosen not put here since they contain profanity. What would have ignited the desire for Abreu to leave? Was it the last place of the club in the last tournament? Was it the exit of Eduardo Tuzzio in which Abreu publicly admitted he was angry about? Was it the pressure of leadership that he was unofficially given? Or was it that the Spanish club provided him with a better salary? You decide.
