After meeting with River president Daniel Passarella, Matias Almeyda will continue to play for River for an additional six months. His contract will run through July 2011, and he possibly extend until the end of next year if Almeyda decided to continue playing before retirement. As River’s captain during the 2010 Apertura Tournament, he undoubtedly became the pillar of the squad. His experience and style was a huge factor in the club’s performance in the past months, and River secured a great player for the upcoming Clausura tournament.
In comments to Fox Sports Radio (La Plata), he states that “I have decided to stay and contribute as much as I can. My cycle as a player ends in July, and I hope to finish much better as we did now. The club is in a difficult situation. There are great future players and I hope we can keep them; they need to be successful with the club so they could be sold better later on.”
Thanks for resigning with the club and you have our total support, Matias!
