One of the very few players who continues to get standing ovations after every match is Matias Almeyda. Through out these past weeks, he has become the unofficial spokesman for the club. Despite River’s poor performance week after week, he continues to give a positive outlook on the situation. During a morning interview with the Despertate show, he stated some encouraging word for those who attended and for every River fan in the world.
“We’re going to get out of this situation; there is no reason to attack the team so much. In our last match, we improved but unfortunately they tied us”, stated Matias Almeyda. Later on the show, he was asked about his return to actively playing in the First Division despite criticisms and stated “As the games pass by, I feel faster and lighter. If your not in shape within my position, you’re going to be embarrassed.”
He finished the interview with a personal reflection of this presence in River Plate. He stated “One knows one’s body and I knew how much I can give. Lots of people did not have trust in me and it’s great to reverse that.” One thing is for sure, he continues to be one of the best players in this poor River squad.
