Marcelo Gallardo left River after years of ups and downs, leaving behind numerous goals and plays in various matches. Also known as the ‘Doll’, Gallardo was one of the most recognizable players associated with River in the past years. In addition, international recognition elevated Marcelo’s game through out his career, and his expertise benefited River on many occasions. Last night’s match was the end for Gallardo, which ended with a standing ovation from the fans and a recognition plaque from the team.
Battling constant injuries became a ritual for Gallardo in recent years which jeopardized his relationship with River. Of course, when he was needed on the pitch, he usually had a presence. His youth was pretty much gone, along with his endurance and stamina. As a result, Marcelo decided to end his stint with River and await new opportunities with other clubs or a possible retirement. One of the last remaining idols of the club, Marcelo did his best to get better and return to the pitch but it was too late.
The 1-5 result that River suffered made his departure even worse. Just when he thought that he would have a chance to play in his final match, the circumstance of the match denied him the opportunity. Nonetheless, he was given a standing ovation from the crowd. In addition, River’s management team and players all hurdled together for one last picture and farewell.
