Words cannot describe the humiliation that I feel right now. River has been on an emotional rollercoaster ever since the being in last place and the team cannot move forward. This past Saturday’s game with Huracan was the last straw. River visited Huracan in hopes of winning a match that would enhance any hopes of winning the Clausura tournament. Huracan, who has been playing really well since the start, eliminated the Millonarios from “title dreaming”. In the neighborhood of Parque Patricios, Huracan downplayed a ghastly River in all directions and to top it off scored four goals to make this a historic afternoon for both teams.mil
It has been getting more difficult to write about River’s disastrous campaign week after week. Once again, the pain in my heart as I type these words continues to worsen. The players that represent River do not realize the importance of this great club. River has a rich history behind its name, beginning in the late 1800s until now. Over the past few years with the help of President Jose Maria Aguilar, River has been part of embarrassing losses and elimination. This game would another game to add to that list. Huracan, who a year ago was playing in Argentina’s “B” division, completely dominated River. Pass after pass, shot after shot, Huracan demonstrated class. River on the other hand looked like a bunch of amateurs playing a scrap game on a Thursday night. With the passing of minutes, Coach Nestor Gorosito practically gave up. Not even Radamel Falcao, Diego Buonanotte, Danilo Gerlo, Oscar Ahumada, or any on the usual starting line up made some type of presence.
Four goals are what River went home with. One goal in the first half and the rest in the second, each was another indication that there is no spirit left in this team. Another issue that has been circulating in the media has been a verbal & physical fist fight that Radamel Falcao and Danilo Gerlo had with each other. Details are not clear as to what happened and why it happened but several witnesses have stated that something did happen. If players are fighting with one another, what kind of hope does this team have? Fans are pretty much fed up and tired with the players and not the club. This is where separation comes into play. During the match, Huracan fans started to chant “Ole! Ole!” as their players played all over River. On the other side, River fans were oblivious as to what was happening on the pitch and concentrated on supporting the club, not the players.
River’s next match is against Independiente in the Monumental Stadium. Independiente is another great club that has been facing tough times. Additionally, River welcomes former player and coach, Americo “El Tolo” Gallego, back to familiar grounds. How will fans react towards this complicated River?
