River’s long-time idol, Marcelo Gallardo, was responsible for changing the mentality of the team in the second half. After the match against Gimnasia, he spoke of the result and the team’s actions during the second half.
“I went in angry and I wanted to play. I respect the decision of Leo (Astrada), and one always wants to play and obviously does not like to be left out, especially when the team is not in an easy situation,” said Marcelo Gallardo, when confronted by La Pagina Millonaria.
“We had to try to go for the game and play on their side of the pitch to create situations. They had dangerous counter-attacks, but we played according to what we set out for in the second half.”
Gallardo added, “We lost 45 minutes and it cost us ‘a lot of paddling upstream’. We have to talk among ourselves and ‘put it in our heads’ that we can not continue to provide advantages to the other team, and lose minutes.”
