Angel Cappa has officially been named new head coach of River Plate. Since the departure of Leonardo Astrada as River’s head coach on Sunday night, many rumors were floating as to who would be the next coach. Of course, Ramon Diaz was the popular choice by fans but River president, Daniel Passarella, had another option. Angel Cappa, currently residing in Madrid, has accepted the offer and could be coaching the Millonarios within two weeks time.
A few seasons ago, Angel Cappa was coaching Huracan to their best standings position in recent years. Huracan finished a strong second and was the new sensation in Argentine soccer. Unfortunately, as habit is, Huracan had to let go many of its important players to meet financial obligations. Angel Cappa met a reduced and weak squad who performed horribly compared to the season before. Poor results led to his dismissal in November 2009 and he moved to Madrid.
Who knew that almost six months later, he would be coaching Club Atletico River Plate. River president, Daniel Passarella, mentioned that Cappa was the right choice for River at this time, and the decision to acquire the head coach was unanimous. Some say that Passarella had a verbal agreement as of Saturday, the 10th. Did the president make the right choice? Was he the only who knew about this all along?
From his temporary home in Madrid, Angel Cappa left a few words concerning his new coaching job in his official blog. “Luckily, I had various opportunities to work. Just recently, I had two European teams offering me opposition, but River’s interest is intense and full of illusion. I’m returning to my ‘football’, and my atmosphere; the one I know the most and care about.”
Mr. Angel Cappa, you have a lot ahead of you. You have most fans against you, and might be received awkwardly. Now is the time to prove yourself . Now is the time to bring River back to its glory days. Convince us, the fans, that you are worth it. Ramon Diaz already has.
